Chevrolet Silverado 1999-2006: How to Replace Oil Dipstick Tube

Whether you want to keep your Silverado's engine and engine components in excellent shape or you have to replace the dipstick tube because it's damaged, here are the easy and quick instructions for you to do it yourself.

This article applies to the Chevrolet Silverado GMT800 (1999-2006).

The oil dipstick tube connects to the engine block and guides the dipstick to the oil pan, allowing you to measure the consistency and amount of engine oil. The engine produces a tremendous amount of power—a lot of pressure is produced as well,—which may cause the the dipstick tube to crack, leak, or shoot out of place. Continue reading below for the steps to properly replace your Silverado's oil dipstick tube.

Materials Needed

  • Replacement oil dipstick tube
  • 15mm socket and ratchet with extension
  • Penetrating oil

Step 1 – Remove the oil dipstick tube

  • The oil dipstick is located directly behind the engine oil cap and has a yellow handle. Pull the dipstick out and set it aside.
  • Remove the 15mm bolt located on the passenger's side of the engine, above the spark plug. This bolt secures the dipstick tube to the engine block.
  • Pull the dipstick tube straight out.
  • Then, pull out the rearmost spark plug for extra room to work in.

Step 2 – Install the new oil dipstick tube

  • Spray the O-ring on the new dipstick tube with penetrating oil.
  • Install the new dipstick tube into the block, and hold it in place.
  • Line up the bracket and tighten its 15mm bolt to a snug fit.
  • Plug in the spark plug and insert the dipstick into the new oil dipstick tube.
