This article applies to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (1999-present).

You've tried running your parking lights, but they still won't work properly. Don't panic! The solution could be as simple as replacing a fuse. While you might need to work under the hood of your truck to resolve this common problem, you can rest assured that you won't be stuck attempting to carry out advanced repair work that requires specialized skills or tools. We will walk you though the easiest solutions first and then explain when you might need to head over to your local mechanic or Chevrolet dealer for more advanced help.

Materials Needed

  • Replacement fuse
  • Relacement LED bulbs

Step 1 – Check the bulbs

They might have burnt out.

The simple truth of driving any vehicle is that your interior and exterior bulbs could burn out.

  • Remove the exterior lens to access the bulb.
  • Check the bulb to determine if the wire filament has, indeed, burnt out.
  • Replace the old bulb with a fresh one.
  • It's recommended that you use LED replacement bulbs for brighter, longer lasting illumination.

Pro Tip

Expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $145 to have your local Chevrolet dealer replace your parking light bulbs and $85 to $100 to have your local mechanic make the switch.

Step 2 – Replace the parking light fuse

It might have blown out.

Similar to a parking light bulb, a parking light fuse can blow out over time. Because fuses are easy to replace, you should be able to snap a replacement into place in a matter of several minutes.

  • Pop the hood of your truck to access your fuse panel.
  • Grab your parking light fuse using the accompanying fuse grabber.
  • If the center metal strip in the fuse is broken or damaged, your parking light fuse is blown and will need to be replaced.
  • Replace the fuse, if it is blown, and then close the fuse panel before lowering the hood of your truck.
  • Check your parking lights by starting the ignition and running your parking lights.

Pro Tip

Fuses are inexpensive and can be purchased for several dollars online or through a local auto parts store.

Step 3 – Have your dealer or mechanic check the electrical system

You might have an electrical problem.

The first step is to have your local Chevrolet dealer or mechanic check your switch as well as ensure power is running to the sockets. Next, your dealer or mechanic should check your electrical system.

  • If your bulbs persistently burn out, you might be using the wrong wattage.
  • You can check the voltage on your own using a voltmeter or have your dealer or mechanic do it.
  • Your dealer or mechanic should run a diagnostic test on your vehicle to determine which components are faulty and in need of replacement or repair.
  • A complete inspection of your truck may be needed, including an inspection of your operating modules.
  • As well, have your dealer check your light circuits for electrical damage or corrosion.
  • It's recommended that you ask for a quote before having electrical repairs done.
  • If your truck is currently under warranty, any needed repairs will be made at no cost to you.
