This article applies to the Chevrolet Silverado, GMT800, GMT900, and K2XX (1999-Present).

Before buying or leasing a Chevrolet Silverado hybrid truck, take a moment to consider the pros and cons of this generally well-received, fuel-efficient vehicle. Launched in 2004, the Silverado hybrid is General Motor's first hybrid passenger vehicle. Standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, the in-vehicle security system OnStar (which offers turn-by-turn navigation and hands free calling), Bluetooth, and a CD/MP3 stereo. This article will review the most important components and features of the Silverado, while looking at the pros and cons of the hybrid model.

Component Breakdown

Mileage

The Silverado Hybrid gets better fuel economy in the city than it does on the highway, so drivers who do a lot of city driving will benefit the most while driving this vehicle. Drivers who opt for a diesel engine will need to keep in mind the maintenance involved with this type of engine. You may be able to go longer intervals in between oil changes, but the cost to change your oil will be at a higher cost due to the higher amount of oil that is needed. The bottom line is this: The hybrid is great for city driving, but you should expect to get lower gas mileage while driving on the highway.

Load Capacity

The added weight of the vehicle's batteries and electric motor means you'll have less towing capacity. However, if you will not be towing heavy hauls, the Silverado hybrid is a good choice for those looking to tow only a small travel trailer. The maximum towing capacity for a 2009 hybrid is 6,100 pounds.

Common Expenses and Repairs

The Silverado hybrid is manufactured with a fuel-efficient engine that is smartly designed to automatically shut down when the truck comes to a stop; thereby, reducing battery power and saving you money at the pump. While the vehicle's battery usually lasts a long time, a replacement can run you close to $2,000. This would be one of the biggest expenses related to the hybrid; however, it is not the only one. If the transmission blows, you could be looking at a repair bill of around $3,000. The upside is these items do not need to be replaced often, and, in some cases, they will not need to be replaced at all.

Scheduled Maintenance

You will want to make sure your fluids are maintained, and when your fluids are replaced, make sure your mechanic uses only premium grade replacements. It is recommended having your vehicle serviced at your local GM dealership or by a Chevrolet certified service specialist. Fortunately, the hybrid battery is a sealed unit, and is not a regularly serviced item, so it incurs no additional service expense.

Common Questions

Are There Any Drawbacks in the Seating?

Due to the location of the battery, some owners have noticed differences in the levelness and comfort of the seating.

Is the Hybrid Environmentally Friendly?

In many ways yes; however, some people complain about the vehicle's lead acid batteries, citing improper disposal could negatively impact the environment.

What is the Miles Per Gallon (MPG)?

Expect to get 20 miles in the city and 23 miles on the highway.

Common Issues

Loss of Battery Power in Cold Temperatures

Your battery module may need to be replaced. Visit a local mechanic if the problem is combined with loss of steering assist.

Bad Window Alignment

A technical service bulletin has been issued; however, you would need to foot the bill for the cost of any repairs. Rattling noises were also reported.

Erratic Speedometer

This could be attributed to a problem with your braking system. Set up an appointment to see a mechanic as soon as possible.

Technical Service Bulletins (TSB)

There have been a number of Technical Service Bulletins issued for the Silverado 1500 Hybrid. The most common issues were related to the vehicle's electrical system, steering system, and digital instrument panel.
