I have been working on installing a Modified 400 sb. into my malibu for the last couple of months.   It never goes the way it should. I had a couple of questions for yall though.   I drained the oil out of the pan the other day and about 3 quarts of antifreeze dumped out before the oil. I finished draining it, then dumped clean oil into it so to lube some of it.   My question is this. Do you think that the head gaskets are the problem or do you think that it might be something as simple as an intake gasket. I have heard several people talk about the 400's having steam jackets that can cause leaks if the heads aren't torked correctly.   Thanks, any help is appreciated.

Well i would say you are going to have to tear down the engine to find the problem. The intake comes off before the heads anyways. Have a good look at the intake before removing the heads.

Hey,   I took the intake manifold off the next day after writting this and found that the intake had a bad seal on it. Then, I got it started a couple of days later and fixed the timing and a bunch of other things only to find something was banging around inside the engine. Took all of the spark plugs out one at a time and conducted a compression test, found outstanding compression, until I went to cylinder #5. The spark plug was all banged up and the header pipe was cold.   I am going to have to take the heads off now. Hopefully it is just a valve and I can reman the heads. I don't think that it was a piston but we'll have to see. Man this really sucks.

I don't know yet.    I'm going to have to work on it over the holiday weekend I guess.   This really bites.   I thought that I would be driving it by now and now I just want it to run so I can drive it home.
