Son just got his driver''s license a couple of weeks ago. He is driving his 95 Tahoe 4x4 (2 door model). He put in a K&N air intake thing and we got him dual exhaust (Flowmasters 40 series) for his birthday. I just went and filled up his car in gas. We figured he is getting slightly over 10 MPG all in town driving. I get at least 12 if not more in my 03 Suburban and it is much heavier etc than the Tahoe. We have told him to "drive like a granny" but am not sure he is complying. Is 10 MPG common for a short wheel base Tahoe? Also he has slightly wider tires that are 16x32s. Would that make a difference?

I have a 1995 Tahoe 4x4 2DR 5.7L, 206,000 miles :) I can still pull off 13 city 15 highway, average 14.7 (ish), I set the cruise at 62 in 55 zones and 72 in 65 zones, and baby the hell out of it off the line to pull of this MPG. If I drove it like a 16 yr old, I bet I would get 10 MPG... (not that he would drive it hard, but hey, driving fast is fun!) but slowly accelerating can save MPGs on the old ones... I have all stock intake / exaust... I put new plugs, a new cap / rotor a while back, (at 200k) and that seemed to help it out a bit... its really simple... for 206k, the only thing is it burns about a quart of oil per 3,000 miles, and my A/C died this summer... if i charge it, I can usually get 3-4 days of A/C... then it stops working again... :( Dirty fuel filter? Dirty Air filter? is it getting all its original 95 HP?! lol... maybe it was higher than that; but after 13 years I think some horses umm, fell off?

It has just under 101,000. Its air filter should be clean since he JUST put all that stuff (air intake) about a month ago. I know he repalced the air filter with SOMETHING since he had a K&N air filter on it that was about 5 months old. I know this because I was supposed to get it as a "hand me down" but it wouldn''t fit my 03 Sub when he put the K &n air intake thing on. I told him he better be getting more than 10 MPG the next fill up. I am trying to figure out a reasonable gas budget for him. School is less than 3 miles away. So i need to figure out that mileage plus he drives 2 miles for work once a week. I have told him I am coming up with a budget and if he goes over that, he can pay for his gas!

Wow... when I was 16 I was LOANED a 1987 Chevy Celebrity Station wagon (worth about 3k at the time)... and had to pay fuel, and insurance... and was only allowed to use the car to go to work so I could buy my own... Yea, 10s not much, but if he is only going such a short distance, it would be all city driving... msn.com and click ''autos'' and you should be able to find the factory MPG for it... 12-15 was the original data http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Spec_Glance.aspx?year=1995&make=Chevrolet&model=Tahoe&trimid=-1 wow, the auto was an option back in 05! A stick tahoe, that would have been fun! and it was 200 HP in 1995... but in 2008, somehow... its not... I''m saving my pennies for a 09 Tahoe

Also he has slightly wider tires that are 16x32s. Bigger tires and/or wheels would make a slight difference (worse) in mpg. But probably the biggest difference is caused by the great auditory response he gets from mashing on the gas.
