Hi all,

I''ve been getting my 84 pickup up to speed and it is doing quite well.  I rebuilt the tranny (my first) and the truck is successfully hauling a ton of bricks every day.  Everything has been fine until two days ago when the fan belt broke and I replaced it.  Not that this symptom is related to the fanbelt or anything.....it''s probably just coincidence.

Anyway...the problem is a ticking noise.  The noise is very specific.  It doesn''t appear to be related to the engine, because it doesn''t make the noise in park or neutral.  It''s not related to the wheels because the frequency is higher than the wheel rotation.  It seems to disappear as I increase in speed, but it could be that I just can''t hear it anymore after 15-20 mph.  It also goes away if I let up on the accelerator.

So....I have a ticking noise that seems to be drivetrain related, but only when in gear, and only when I am accelerating.  I would say that the frequency is 10 ticks per 1 wheel rotation.  It is fairly faint.

Any thoughts?  Thanks

Interesting answer!  I woulda never thunk it.  Now, in my configuration, there is no carrier bearing, since the rear driveshaft goes from the transfer case to the rear differential...likewise the front driveshaft.  But I did inspect everything else as you suggested....and sure enough, one of the mounting bolts for the transfer case has worked itself loose and is now distorted.  The transfer case only has two mounting bolts and it sits on a couple of heavy rubber seats.  With one bolt loose, I reckon that''ll cause some twisting.

Couldn''t put a new bolt in last night, but I''ll be picking one up today and install it tonight and see how it goes.  I''ll report back.  Thanks!

good luck ,some of the front shaft''s have constant velocity joint''s two u-joints on one end with a cap yoke that bolt''s to the flange yoke kind of a spring loaded affair. i hope the bolt does it .

Woo Hoo!!  Old Dog...you are my new hero.

Had a bit of trouble finding a replacement bolt because it is kind of a specialized shoulder bolt...so I gave the old one a little "adjustment" with my hammer and straightened it out.  Tightened the Transfer Case up good''n proper and the tick is GONE!

Thanks!
John
