I am having a reoccuring problem with my Malibu... I've had it a little over 2 years and this problem has happened twice so far. The first time, it corrected itself somehow and now it's doing it again...
When I try to pump gas, the gas pump thinks my tank is full (when I know FOR SURE that it's not). Gas will spew back out of my car or the pump kicks off... My husband has been driving it a few times to the coal mine where he works and gets it pretty muddy sometimes. I have noticed that the first time this problem happened, he was driving it to work and getting it very muddy...
I know there are vents and hoses that allow the air pressure in the tank to be regulated.. I was wondering if there may be a vent or something on the outside of the fuel tank that could be stopped up because of the mud? If so, where would the vent be located?? Thanks for the help!!

Have the codes ran on it (at autozone or other auto parts stores) and see if it kicks any EVAP emissions codes.

There aren't realy any external vent for the fuel system(would cause a leak). The filler tubes have a main tube, and a breather tube. The main tube is where you pump the gas into and has a check ball at the end of it to prevent gas from spilling out in a rollover, and also to prevent siphoning. The check ball could be stuck in the closed position from rust. The breather tube goes into the tank usually at the top, and will run alongside the main tube allowing for an air exchange as you are refueling. It connects at the top of the main tube being sealed up when you put the gas cap on. there could bea lot of mud on the top of the tank that is maybe pinching the line and keeping it from breathing, or the vent at the top of the main tube could be plugged
