1990 Cavalier Z24 - won't fire

We have a 1990 Cavalier Z24.  Daughter was driving home from school (maybe 3 miles) and the car died and wouldn't start back up.  When I got to the car and got in, I could smell burnt or melted wire or plastic inside the car - not outside or under the hood.  I checked all the fuses, loosened the panel under the dash and checked wires / connections, and found nothing wrong.  The fuel pump works - I can hear it, but it doesn't seem to be getting any fuel - I can't smell any when trying to start it even if I hold the pedal down.  What's next to check?  Am I guessing right that the ignition switch would be the next likely culprit?  How much of a hassle is that?  Thanks for any input ....

the next step would be to check if the engine is getting spark, check fuel pressure, and to see if the injectors are firing

Something I should add here as this might help diagnose the problem a little easier - my daughter said she "smelled something burning" before the car died, and then just a few seconds later, it died.
