I've got a 2001 silverado extended cab with a 4.8L, I've had it for a couple of weeks now and I notice first thing in the morning when I start it I can hear the lifters for a couple of minutes. Is this a sign of a bad oil pump or something?

I hear that sometime in my truck and my camaro I think it is called lifter tap and it is fairly common.

Just traded my 2000 Silverado X cab, 233,000 miles. I had the same issue for at least 100,000 miles. If I did not let it idle a few minutes it sounded pretty bad on acceleration, but always quieted after several minutes.

My 4.3L Vortec does the same thing and so does all of our utility vehicles with the exception of the Sonoma and the 4.8L van.

<\\;P>\\;it’s infamous "\\;morning sickness"\\;. most likely you have pushrod engine, and it’s a typical noise. GMC says not to worry. use better oil, it quenches the noise quite well. <\\;/P>\\;
<\\;P>\\;oh, and welcome to the club. we have so called "\\;clunkers"\\; - trucks that make more noises than driving. i am really sorry i lost that 6 page GM "\\;scientific"\\; explanation on why all of those noises are "\\;normal"\\; on their trucks. fun to read.<\\;IMG src="\\;http://www.chevroletforum.com/image/s13.gif"\\;>\\;<\\;IMG src="\\;http://www.chevroletforum.com/image/s2.gif"\\;>\\;<\\;/P>\\;

I have an 01 Silverado, same noise at start up when I bought it, and even now at over 150k. My moms 01 impala and my stepdads 97 S-10 still does the same thing. GM says it''s no problem, and that nothing can be done to correct it.

ok, now that they fixed the site: it is normal situation for GM pushrod engines. it''s morning sickness - noise from lifters before they get filled with oil.
