I plan to pull a car carrier from Uhaul this weekend in my 97 Tahoe and need to attach a terminal to the wires under my rear bumper. The connection is a "four flat" and I need to know if my end will have the 3 male and one female terminal, or vise-versa. Also, my owners manual says to untape the seven wires under my rear bumper, and connect the proper wires. I seem to only need four, and which four do I use?

dk blu = aux lead
red= batt power
lt grn= backup lamps
dk grn = rh turn hazard stoplamp
yel= lh turn hazard stop lamp
brn= tail and license lamps
blk= frame ground plateform hitch ground
wht= trailer ground w/UY7

yeah, the 4 flat you have under the bumper is all you need.. the other wires is if you want the 7 way connector.

just get a Two Ready T-one connector. It simply plugs inline at the factory connectors with no splicing. It will provide you with the 4way flat you need. I also seem to remember the battery charge line to be Orange not red in 97. They went to Red in the 99 new body style trucks and in 2000 on the tahoe/suburbans.

The T-One connector (which you can get many places) is definitly the quickest (they claim install time of 5 minutes) way to get a trailer hookup. I used one on mine originally but bought a larger trailer and had to wire up brakes which meant referring to the drawing. I actually now have the 4 and 7 connector.
