DixieD -> Rear end/tranny (5/8/2008 11:28:54 PM)

In my 1988 Caprice, I am about to put in my new 383 (upgrade from 305). I will have 400+hp/450tq. Will the stock tranny and rear end be able to handle this kind of power or should I be replacing everything? Any recommendations?

if you are going to hammer it hard at the drag strip and street all the time it will take a toll on it ,but if you drive with care and sense they should be ok .

No dragging for me, this is my daily driver. Although, the occasional "punch to surprise the civic" might be in store.

will that kind of power you should invest on a good posi (if you dont allready have one). I changed over to a 383 from a 305 on my 84 camaro and so far Ive had to upgrade my torque arm and rear end because that occasional punch to suprise the civic takes its toll on that weak rear end. upgrade your rear if you havent done so, trust me.
p.s. dont get a big gear like 4.10 because its not good on the freeway. I had a 3.08 from an impala ss and it worked out good.
