looking at buying a used 92 Z71, currently has 295k miles on it and will require a rebuilt engine installed. it currently belongs to a friend of mine who has owned it for 9 years and has kept it in excellent shape. wanted to know how long a rebuilt motor would last and if it would be too much maintenance to keep up with? thanks

Welcome to the forum!!! A rebuilt will last you along while, as long as you take care of it, maintanence should just be normal after the rebuild. Some other stuff you may need to look in to is the tranny and transfer case, if they have been rebuilt or are original.

Depends on what needs to be fixed/replaced. Can you be more specific on what needs to be fixed?

wow that's a lot of miles on a old chevy, my neighbor has a 1996 chevy with 350 engine and it has 311K miles and motor still runs fine. But he has had two transmissions, 3 or 4 starters, many brake repairs, doors will not close properly, etc: Unless you are buying the truck for almost nothing, a truck with that many miles may have a number of other problems that will pop up as soon as you get the brakes and motor fixed. Brake rebuild: $400 motor rebuild: $????? 1500-2500 now at top end you have invested $3000 in a truck with 300K. maybe you need to think about this and look at another truck. Good luck,

You've also got all the wiring harnesses, the ecm, and the transmission to deal with as well. A chevy motor will last 250k+ miles if you maintain it well, but transmissions are a different story. A good basic tranny rebuild will run you any where from $750 to $1200 roughly too. Unless you know someone who will give you a break. I've got the 4L80e tranny in mine and just recently had it rebuilt. The guy replaced all clutches and bands and solenoids, the planetary gear, bearings, valvebody and filter for $1100. The guy was a friend of a friend so I got a good deal. Or you can go a different route and drop in an older rebuilt 350 thats carbuerated and not have to deal with the computers and wiring.

Jmack, I guess I did not have a good a friend as you did working on my 4L80E transmisssion. I have 80K on my 2000 chevy 2500 series. The torque converter went out and it cost me $1100 to have it repaired. Transmission was checked, but it was fine. good luck and stay safe,
