If you can get a good wrecked truck for cheap, yea it is possible.  Me and a buddy took a wrecked 198x K5 blazer and pulled the 305, tranny, front axle, suspension, and transfer case then put it in a 85 c10 truck with minimal fabrication.  The rear suspension had to be modified from a blazer to a truck, but I don't know about a 2000 truck, I would *assume* it would work no problem though, but don't quote me.  I take it that old dog's comment "$40,000" refers to buy a new truck?

thry stopped making them relivatly easy to convert about 1959 when they had leaf spring's ,after that you would have to want one real bad !

i've seen it done. its not just a money thing but its the alignment of all the parts. the driveline. cutting things off the truck to allow axles to fit. its just alot of time and work. its worth spending the extra cash and just buy a newer or what have you truck with four wheel drive.

hmm i have heard that from alot of people....just buy a new truck..but i mean my truck is already lifted, aside from the little bullshit problems i have with it i would like to keep it...but i guess going to a 4wd is just a pipe dream that i am gonna have to accept won't happen
