I have a '98 K1500 Silverado with 305 ci (5.0L for all those who prefer
metrics) and 5 sp. manual tranny.  I'm lookin to beef the truck up
some and was wonderin what the most effective way to get more HP and
Torque from the 305 is.  I'm lookin for some serious bang for the
buck considering I am working on a limited budget.  Meaning - no
turbo, no blower/supercharger, nothing that runs into 4 digits.
The truck is pretty much stock now.  I have some ideas about what
I want to do to it, but was wondering what you guys thought were the
best upgrades.

Also, I would like some input on what exhaust sounds the best on the
305.  I'm looking into headers with 3" collectors, 3" Y-pipe, high
flow cat, 3" split rear, but am not sure what type of muffler to
run.  I know I said I'm operating on a limited budget, and the
exhaust parts I'm looking at will definitely blow my current funds
away.  So, engine upgrades are first, then the exhaust.

Any input is sincerely appreciated.  Thank all of you in advance.

Having owned a pre2000 Silverado 5.7 V8 and post2000 Silverado 5.3 V8, I can tell you that the different in power and performance is remarkable.  You might be further ahead just to upgrade to a 2000+ Silverado with a 5.3 V8.  Short of that, the most bang for the buck will probably be to change the computer chip for more performance.  Check out www.performanceproducts.com and call them for their technical advice.  They carry all type of performance products and exhaust systems.   All this can be expensive, and I think you will be much happier with a 5.3 V8 and the gas mileage is better too.  This engine has more power than I ever need to use even at high altitude and gets about 2-3 mpg better gas mileage than the old bigger 5.7 V8.  And it's stock.

I appreciate the advice  Jimbo, but I'm not into  buying a
new truck.  I just bought this one a month ago.  I'm glad to
hear that your truck has more power than you will ever need, but mine
doesn't.   I also prefer the built it not bought it
philosophy.  Anyone can go to a lot and pick out a truck that will
do what they want.  I prefer to buy a truck based on what I can
make out of it, not on what it is.  A stock truck is fine, there
are a lot of them out there that look really good, but they are
stock.  They look stock, they sound stock, and they perform like
stock.  I want a vehicle that people know is mine, not a stocker
that anyone can have.  I appreciate the input, but that is not the
question i asked.  In the future, please do me a favor before you
reply to a question from me - read and understand the question fully
before answering.   i.e. I am on a limited budget - meaning
that I don't have the money for a new truck.

I do appreciate the tip on the chip or programmer.  Have looked
into one and will probably be gettin one in the near future.

Thanks, and remember BUILT IT NO BOUGHT IT.

i would do an exhaust or a chip  maybe a new intake or ignition. if u can find them cheap enough all three would work great together. as for exhaust i love flowmaster but dual 3 inch pipe is overkill for a 305  sometimes bigger pipe is not always better    u lose the scavenging effect do to slow moving exhaust with to big of a pipe. if you are running duals go with a 2.25 diameter pipe  no larger than a 2.50   if it is single exhaust a 3 inch will be fine though  try autoanything.com for the parts. summitracing.com and jegs.com may also have what u are looking for
