    i am building a custom truck. i am starting out with a 1970 c10 long bed step side. what i am doing is i am going to put a 4/6 drop on it. drop a diesel motor in it and i am going to put two dually axles in the rear, both driven. what i am wondering is what would be the best rear end i could put behind there that will hold up to a lot of torture. it will doing a lot of towing and will have a lot of power going through it. if anyone can help i would appreciate it

Wow... that a big job. I recommend anything thats made by Allison. Don't use GM rear-ends. They don't make them to hold up to the stress of pulling (i.e. tractor/sled pull). Start with a google search for heavy duty dually rear-ends and see what that gets you. You may have to step up to something thats made by International, Mack or Volvo if you are doing extreme stuff. It would really help to know exactly how big of a diesel engine you are dropping in.

more than likely it will be a 6.6l duramax diesel. i know they are not the best diesels in the world but i am trying to keep as much gm as possible. rear end is not a big deal that i will go with anything. but as far as towing goes, i want it to be able to pull a loaded down 5 car hauler pretty much on a daily basis

I'm just wondering how you are going to get the diesel engine in there AND lower it.

a lot of fabrication, there is enough room if i take out the fender wells and do alot of welding and cutting. as far as the drop goes i am hoping to do a supsension/ spring drop, but i may end up c notching the frame and bagging it.

Could you possibly find a newer model diesel in a junkyard and recover the rear-end?

i probably can find one. the problem lies in that i need two for a tandem axle setup

one other option i have been thinking about in Dana makes a tandem axle set up for big rigs. it would be mass conversion going through the truck. but it would not be too terribly hard. i could easily through that set up under there with a 6.6L duramax and allison transmission. and then all i would have to do is set up the brake system for air brakes instead of dot3. a little bit of time but i could get it to work

If you are only going 6.6, then you don't need a tandem axle set up for an 8 liter engine. Just get the chevy rear-end while you are after the Duramax and Allison.

thats not a bad idea. should i go with 3/4 ton or 1 ton axles? keep in mind both are going to be driven. i am having a custom transfer case built for the axles i decide to go with so that both axles with be driven.
