Our 06 4.8 didnt get great MPG soon after driving it off the lot but at some point in the last 25,000 miles that are on it we get 16-17 city and 18-20 highway.

Its a crew cab 2x4 and if I would have trusted the dealer he said the 5.3L would get better MPG than the 4.8. I have since bought a 01 with and 5.3 and I think I average 18 city 22 highway, its a 4x4 ext. cab, older than our 06 and I put my foot in it all the time.  It came with a flowmaster muffler on it probably a FM 40 it is load but probably adds a few percentages to better MPG.

A cold air kit could help or try a K&N filter replacement. I used one on my Cherokee and noticed a small increase in throttle performance, not sure how much it helped in MPG.

5.8L yea it was a typo cdusthockey

they didnt even make a 5.8l in 01, it was either a 5.3,6.0.  but i really dont know why anyone would get a 4.8 to begin with.  id rather get a 96 vortec 5.7, and i know from experience that those can get 19mpg on the freeway easy
