I have a 2002 2500HD 6.0L with 4.10 gears. I bought this truck in 02' to pull my travel trailer but since I no longer have the travel trailer, I was wondering if I could swap the 4.10 gears for some 3.73 gears. I'm trying to find something that will get me better mpg and thought this would be the best and cheapest way. I am not concerned with lower my towing capacity because I will not be pulling anything heavier than 4000lbs. Also, where can I get some 3.73 gears at a good price?

2WD I presume? You can make the gear change but it is fairly pricey to do and doubtful that you will notice any improvement at all in economy; certainly not enough to ever recover the expense of the gear change. Ebay has many gear sets for sell dirt cheap. Have you considered trading to a half-ton model?

what mpg do you get now? I have 3/4 ton with 350 engine and 3.73 gears, it only gets about 10 mpg pulling travel trailer and 14/15 around town. I am an old fat fart and drive about 55-60 most all the time. Put the pencil to it, how long will it take in mileage savings to recoupe your investment. Also, with current gears if you need to hookup you can pull, who knows the condition of the used gear set you may get, they may be worn out. I would think about it for awhile, might be cheaper to trade trucks, but again its hard to justify trading a good reliable truck for the small increase in mpg. Just my 2 cents!

It's a 2wd and I get around 12-13 mpg driving to work and around town. I was just thinking of some ways to improve mileage and this was one idea that came to mind. I would love to trade it in for a 1500 Z71 crew cab, but I don't need another truck note right now.

i will say my 07 6.0L 2500hd 4x4 with 4.10's Vs my 1/2 ton with 3.42's - id swear i almost get better mileage out of the 3/4 ton in town. i never check it much - its a WT and dont have all the fancy crap i the dash but it seems like the 1/2 ton eats up just as much gas untill you get out on the highway. i average 12-13 in town with the 1/2 ton and 19 hwy, my 3/4 ton seems to get 10-12 in town and 10 towing, maybe 3 if my foot gets heavy
