My friend decided to play mechanic and try to change the timing belt on his cavalier. He didn't put the #1 cylinder to tdc and just started dismantling things. Now his chain is off, the cams have rolled and he needs to fix it. How do i help him? Do i need to get the #1 cylinder to tdc and then rotated the cams until i get them to become stiff or something? I haven't dealt much with 4 cylinder engines yet. Any help would be appreciated

First bring the #1 cyl. to tdc. Both cam gears have a small hole in them if you need to line the holes up with the holes behind them. They make a special tool for it or you can use a bolt for both of them. Then install your chain.
