I just purchased a 2003 Sliverado Z71 with 56000 miles. It has a distinct clunk shifting from 2nd-3rd, and is very distinct when slowly accelerating. When you accelerate quicker it is less noticeable. Is this something that is common with this type of transmission? Is it just the way this transmission is designed and nothing to worry about. Any info would be appreciated as I can still have dealer fix if this is a problem.

I have a 2000 old style 3/4 ton with the 4L80E transmission and it does not make that noise.

Since you just bought the truck you probably do not know the mechanical maintenance history of the transmission.

I would have the codes ran, see is it shows anything, if not, then at least drop the pan change fluid and filter.

I would not like that noise, but as other guy said you may have to live with it, just hard for me to believe they all make that noise.

Might talk to a transmission mechanic, change to synthetic oil, could smooth it out.

I have an 04 with 30k and it does the exact same thing.  Told the dealer about it they said it is backlash and you hear it due to the alum. driveshaft.  I believe if you look in your owners manual it also says the clunking is normal due to the backlash.  It has to have some play in it to work properly
