1959 Impala rear end noise

deucegod32 -> 1959 Impala rear end noise (5/30/2005 6:41:22 PM)

I have a 1959 impala sport sedan with a stock rear end... three control
arms with the panhard bar.  Whenever I decelerate from letting off
of the accelerator or put on the brakes I can hear a distinct thunk
sound coming from somewhere in the back of the car.  I got under
the car and tried to see if I could see any bad bushings, wiggle the
driveshaft, or any of the control arms.  Everything seemed rock
solid.  I would like to get some opinions before I go tearing
things apart and buying parts.  Thanks to whoever responds!

i dont think that it would have anything to do with the diff inside.  how about a body mount? if tis during deceleration, it is something caused by the vehicle weight shifting forward...

check carrier bearing.  midway down driveshaft.  common probs
on vintage impalas.  inland empire out of california makes a great
billet replacement.

also, check u joints.

Thanks for your input.  I checked the carrier and nothing really
seemed wrong with it.  The ring and pinion were nearly perfect and
the spider gears were good.  I did not notice any play in the
U-joints or the hanger bearing.  I plan on changing the U-joints
anyway and I will see if that cures it.... If not then the hanger
bearing.... If none of those then... well... some bushing in the rear
suspension somewhere.  Thanks again for the input!
