transfere case problem.......... - 8/10/2006 10:55:24 AM

hi, i just picked up a '94 chev. 3/4ton 4x4 with 454 and auto. trans. there's 160,000 miles on truck but is in great condition mechanically. however i put the tranny in neutral select 4xhigh, no problem. but when trying to shift from 4x high to 4xlow or even back into 2x i get sounds of gears grinding. the only way to get it out of 4xhigh (or low depending which you selected initialally from the 2x position) is to turn the truck off, select transfere case position, then re-start truck. i'm wondering if there is an adjustment or something i can do to fix this. i bought a haynes book but they don't get too specific in this area. i'm also assuming that this '94 transfere case shifting procedure is the same as , lets say a '72 k-5 blazer w/auto transmission. this haynes book didn't show fuel capacities and i was told it had a 27-28 gallon tank, but the other day when i filled it up it took 30.2gals. and the gauge showed a 1/4 tank left before i filled it. and yes, 2 times i looked under the truck to see if it was leaking(lol)
any input would be appreciated.

thanks...Jon

If you have the owners manual it will tell you the options for tank sizes, as far as your transfer I would shut it off it crossing neutral, unless it is a clutch you can hold the clutch if you are not moving. I don't understand why auto's do it but I have had the same luck.

My '79 GMC K2500 did the same thing with the transfer case. It was an automatic. I don't know if they were designed that way or what.

On that body style a 6 foot bed has a 26 gallon tank and an 8 foot bed has a 34 gallon tank. I've had both. Have a '93 Silverado 4x4 with a six foot bed now, but had a '91 3/4 ton and a '94 1 ton with 8 foot beds.
