I recently purchased an assembled 383 short block from a "reputable builder" along with a set of 305 heads (also assembled. I had help installing the engine and soon was grinning with alot of new-found hp and tq. However, 3500 miles into the break-in, a loud knock began and I was forced to put into the shop once more. I began the troubleshooting by removing individual spark plugs and traced it down to #4 cylinder. I figured it was a pin or piston slap, or something like that. My experience has shown that a knock getting louder with removing the plug indicates that it is NOT a bearing problem. The heads were also found to be bad with one push rod bent and two roller tips barely riding on their perches. The builder had me crate and ship the now partially disassembled short block and heads back to him. He is now claiming that while the heads were indeed his fault and would be refunded, the engine problem was a bearing. Moreover, he claims that "aggressive timing" was to blame. B.S.???
I guess I'm looking for affirmation and any opinions ya'll have since I have never heard of this. In my opinion it can't be a timing issue because:*No hard starts*No pinging*spark plugs looked normal*no pitting on pistons*only 12 degrees of timing. Please help, Justin

Yea the agressive timing remark does sound like BS, 12 degrees advance isn't "agressive" enough.  You know you can just go on enginekits.com and get a good rebuild kit for so damn cheap it isn't funny, and just make him fix the heads.

I was going to say the 305 heads would have super small combustion chambers and raise your compression up pretty high, so unless you were running a decent ocatane fuel you may not have been able to get very agressive with your timing, and the pinging you heard was detenation, then I read further into your post and I was wrong. How high did you turn your motor? Did you ever miss a shift or over rev her?
