How is your radiator? If its got alot of junk inside, it could be clogging up. Is it still getting really hot then cooling down, and back and forth? or is it just getting hot and staying hot?

Since you haven't checked it yet, go ahead and look at the water pump.  I have seen pumps the looked fine, but the chemicals in the water had over time eaten away most or all the impeller blades.  They don't move much water with no impeller, and the result was just about what you are describing.

What you have a external gauge, which maens that it will need to be mounted out side the cluster, typically most (if not all) external gauges don't hook up to the warning light, Are you instructions asking you to?
