When I press the gas pedal the engine is hesitating. There have been several times recently that the engine has even died while coming away from a stop sign or stop light. When I come up an incline on the freeway the engine is pinging until I let up a bit on the gas pedal. I just put in a new overhauled engine 3000 miles ago. I do not understand what is going on.

I replaced my fuel pump 2 years ago and the pump still has very good pressure so I don't think that is the problem. I do not understand what you mean by "cat". Please define the expression.

If it is pinging it could be a knock sensor. I don't know if that would make it stall or not though. Untill you said that it sounded like it was just timing. If you timing chain was not lined up it could do that. The knock sensor could do that too. It controls the timing too. It will change it depending on the gas in the car. If you run a higher compression it will a lower octane will want to preignite. The different octane's are not nessesarily better gas, just a higher "heat rating" (sorry I can't spell). The knock sensor will change the timing if it wants to preingnite. But if it is bad it could be completley haywire, or I would say try mid-grade. Is your engine light on?
Let us know.
