Mistreated GMC Jimmy...I have some repair questions

zetakappa700 -> Mistreated GMC Jimmy...I have some repair questions (1/23/2008 5:30:06 PM)

2000 GMC Jimmy SLT
4.3L V6

Most importantly, the horn on my Jimmy has stopped working. I checked the fuses and they appear to be in good shape. I plan to borrow a current tester to check for power at the plug...Any other ideas?

Secondly, the driver side window works very speratically. Normally only when its about 50 degs. I have replaced the control pannel but the problem continues. Could this be a worn out window motor?

Lastly, the fuel gauge on my jimmy is only correct when the tank is full. It drops as I use up the gas in the tank and at about the last 1/4 tank the gauge jumps to full. Could this be a faulty sensor in the fuel pump?

There is a horn relay under the hood. Check that too!

Definately a sign that the door motor going bad.

Thats a common problem... You can't replace the sensor itself. You have to replace the whole fuel pump. Usually after a sending unit and fuel pump, the problem will be fixed.

I tried to swap the relay from my ac and the horn still did not work. BTW the realys were the same model numbers. Any ideas? Should I buy another relay from the dealer or auto shop?

One more thing, I had the rear axle seals replaced and it rides much better, but I notice a  humm that I didn't hear before. Could the oil level in the diff have anything to do with it? Are the connected? I had it done at a dealer.

Your A/C works right? If it does, its not the relay, its the switch inside the steering wheel.
The humm you hear is probably a normal thing. Check the fluid. It needs to be level with the check plug. I notice a humm occasionally in the rear and sometimes a knocking sound in the front, but only in cold weather.

I'm not sure if the A/C works...its winter. However, I'll check tomorrow. How hard it it to get to the switch in the steering wheel? Also, is there any way to rule out a bad horn?

...Thinking about it I have 2 horns and it sound far fetched that both would go out together.

How do I fix it?

Quick thought. Could the car alarm have caused my problems? I only think this because when the horns worked, they would sound when I set the alarm. They don't now. During that action, wouldn't the steering wheel switch be bypassed?

I doubt the alarm would have anything to do with the operation of the horn itself. Its pretty hard to get in the wheel to check things, but the dash bezel has to come off.

you are exactly right.....I would be checking for power and ground at the horn itself at this point. Sounds like a bad horn

Isn't it odd that they both went out at the same time? How much power should I read at the horns?
