You might have the codes checked, some of the national brand autostores will check codes for free. If you have obd 1, you can check the codes yourself, put a jumper betewwen the A&B terminals at the data link connector, turn the key on, no crank. The CEL will start flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. There is info all over the web telling how to access those codes. It is costly to maintain a vehicle, if it hasn't had a tune-up in a while, start there. Change all the filters, plug wires, check fuel pressure. If there is a problem with the idle, I would check the idle air system. You might remove the IAC and clean it off, there may be a spec for how far the pintle sticks out, when you go to put it back in. I don't have that info in front of me. You could take the throttle-body off, give it a good cleaning, make sure the passages are clear.
