I bought my last GM car. This post is about why detroit is falling off the end of the earth. I bought a new chevy car. I have had it in more times than I can count. The last three times was for a clunking in the front end and a smell comming out of the vent. the vent smell keeps comming back, I called GM direct and got a run around. that they did all they can do. My war. is up in 2k miles.
I can tell you I wanted to buy toyota like all the other people I know and they do not have problems, but no good deed goes unpunished.
I do not own one as of yet but can tell you I am a toyota man now.
Every one I know that has one just does not have problems. I am not saying there in never a problem but I know several people who have them and they just dont have trouble.
They run and run and just do not quit.
My brother has a truck he bought in 96 it has 159k on it and he only put a clock spring in the steering.
Same type of thing with every one else I talk to.
At this rate toyota will take over the auto market soon.
GM and Ford can kiss where the sun does not shine. My money goes to where it does me the best. I am sick and tired of trying to buy US and getting the short end of the stick.

Gosh... I know you have had problems, but we really don't need any more opinions about why one automaker is better than the other. They ALL have their problems. Turn it in under the lemon law. If you've had it in the garage X amount of times, you can get a new one. The smell coming out of the vents is probably a dead mouse or something that has gotten in your ventilation system or else Dirty Sock, which is cause by bacteria on the coil. That is fixable by disinfecting the coil. Seriously, if you have problems and it is not fixed, that blame lies with the dealership alone, not with the automaker.

The smell that comes out from the vent is when someone puts in one of those refresher next to it or uses those spray stinkers and it recirculates into the vent and gets on the heater core and it smells like someone pissed in the car when you get in and first start it up. The cure is start it up put the heat on high on vent and leave the windows open for about a hour and it will go away. The clunking noise is probably the steering shaft bushing that is worn and they are looking for the big picture and not the little one. All cars have faults, some just don't show and some do. Don't blame US on the makers because US don't make many of them anymore most are from other countries. My daughter has a Pontiac Vibe that has a Toyota drive train in it. That tells me GM has got a little Toyota in them stocks to. One bad GM does not make them all bad or one other make does not make all bad so hope you can find what is wrong and enjoy what ever ride you have. I would drive a little and find another GM service and give them a try. It could be just the people that is working on it that has the problem not GM.

I got a 1996 Chevy Cavalier with 102790 miles on it and so far I replace tires and brakes still gets 37 miles to the Gal. I bought it new with 1 mile on it.
2002 Monte Carlo 32+miles and never been in the shop except for oil change ,bought it new with 38 miles on it
Just bought 2007 Chevy Malibu Ma xx SS will see how it does.. it had 65 miles on it.

Sometimes there is a sour grape in a certain vehicle that it is just prone for break downs..no matter what brand it is...

I have to agree with the original post. GM wonders why sales are slipping? My 2004 Chevy Cavalier is a POS. My very first car was a 1989 Cavalier bought at an auction for under $1000 and I had it for years, only requiring minor maintainence...and I even sold it at 150K miles to someone who drove it yet another year close to 75 miles a day until they ruined the car trying to change the spark plugs...

2nd car was a Geo Prizm, had some minor issues but still not a bad car.

Then I decided that since I was an official grown up and 30 years old, it was time to buy my first brand new car. The Geo had pretty much expired at 90K miles, a quart of oil disappearing in between oil changes, complete exhaust needed and one tech smelled gas while checking out the exhaust. So at year end, I picked up the dealer car that had bells and whistles I didn't need, but for 12K it was loaded. I'd never had power windows or locks before, XM radio, Onstar...the works. Sold!

A year passed and the car was great, then the first glitch was an overheating turn signal...basically it would stop blinking after 20 min. of driving. Fixed under warranty, no problem. At the end of 2006, the driver window motor died...again, fixed under warranty.   January 2007 rolls around and the dashboard is lit up like a Christmas, every possible light is on. Take in, they replace wiring harness, under warranty. A month later it happens again and now I'm officially out of warranty but I take it back and no problem.

August 2007, window motor gets stuck yet again but miraciously starts working 3 days later...

Then a few weeks after that I stall on the interstate, in rush hour, in a construction zone. Car just stopped running. Started up no problem but now I'm a little nervous.   Stalls again when I turning into my garage a few months later but starts right up. Changed air filter and put in some fuel injector cleaner and we've okay since, fingers crossed.

So November 2007, the window dies again. I am out of warranty and assume there's no recourse. The window isn't budging.   I call a few weeks later more to complain and they tell me that I have a 12 month guarantee on the work. I take it into the dealer and get a "we're sorry, you're 10 days past the 12 month guarantee." Nice.   My boyfriend tries for 3 hours to get the thing apart for me but can't get the motor out so he takes it in for me, pitches a fit and they act like they'll take care of it. Sure, they replace it and hand him a bill for $300 even though the door was apart down to the motor! He pitches a fit and demands they split the bill, and with a lobby full of customers, they oblige.

I write to GM and play phone tag with customer service for 2 weeks. They tell me that since the dealer "offered" to split the bill, they couldn't do anything else. Whatever. All these problems and the car just hit 50K, can't wait to see what happens next!

Next car won't be a GM for sure!

I'm moving this to the off-topic area.

People have differing opinions, and some vehicles have problems more than others. I have not experienced any problem with my Chevrolet, other than a starter. I'm not saying that Chevrolet is better than the rest. We are not here to argue about how Chevrolet is lesser or better than other automakers. If you want to drive an import, thats your perogative, if you want to buy a domestic, same thing.

Kimber, Cavaliers did get a bit unreliable at the end of their run. The new Aveo and Cobalt lineups are alot more reliable. I urge you to try a Cobalt and you will not be let down.

I don't know how much money you make, but I certainly can't afford to pay to fix mechanical problems on a vehicle that I am still making payments on after just 3 years! The back door flew open last week when I turned a corner...the Onstar system lights change from red to green and I don't pay for that service...it goes on and on. Everyone I talk to is SHOCKED at the amount of mechanical issues this vehicle has and trust me, I tell everyone who will listen.

"Try" another car? I "try" a new restaurant, not my only form of transportation. Please.

I purposely bought a Cavalier for the reliability factor and I wanted an American made vehicle so I didn't even consider anything else. I personally feel betrayed. I just hope I can find a dealer who will take it without me losing too much. I've had enough.

You know kimber, you should've gotten a Corolla. My roommate's Corolla only needed a new engine after 80,000 miles. They're super reliable. My family's 7 crappy Chevy's only all made it over 150,000 miles with no problems before being traded off for new ones. Wait, did I just sound really sarcastic? Whoops, looks like I did.

I tried to respond nicely, but now you are fired up.

You got a lemon. Does that mean you will turn your back on the orchard if you get a sour grape? Please. Things happen. You'll find that as long as you take care of a vehicle of any make (routine maintainence, light on the accel) it will last you just as long as you stand to drive the old thing.

I'm sure your back door opened because you didn't close it properly.

Does the little onstar light honestly bother you that bad?

By "try" I meant research, test drive, or even rent one.

On a different note:
I must also let everyone know to keep this thread civil. I know we have differing opinions and people get fired up, but if I think it is getting too far out of hand, I'll close the topic.

Of course I'm fired up, I owe $6000 on car that I'm fed up with.

My parents had Cavaliers run to over 150K and so did I with good maintenance, which is why I bought what I did. It isn't the same anymore, sadly.

And in Ohio, the Lemon Law only kicks in if you've had the same problem three times in under 18K miles.

How condescending of you. Yes, I closed the door properly. I know how to close a door. Thanks for the assumption, much appreciated. The latch was stuck. I pulled over into the first safe place I could and pulled it down by hand so it would catch. Yes, I'm a girl and I got my hands dirty! And yes, thank you, I sprayed it with WD-40 that day. It still doesn't work, I just don't open that door anymore.

And yes, a red light on my rear view mirror is a distraction while driving. That's why it's red, it's purpose is to catch your attention.

I had bought a Toyota Camry- being a single mother living far away from civilization- thinking it would be a reliable vehicle. At 57k miles, it needed a new engine (maintained the heck out of it). While having it fixed, I rented an Impala. Been hooked ever since. Bought an 02 -It's had a few problems, but nothing I'd consider major. Also have an 89 Camaro. Still no major problems.

I'm sticking with Chevy.
