I have a 2000 4wd, 4.8 v8, with a 4 inch Rancho Lift.

I wish I had more power!!!!

Installed a flowmaster exhaust and KN air intake. Im now thinking of changing the 3.78gears to 4.11/4.10s front and rear. I have (NOT) chipped it but would be up for it. Everyone on most forums jump on the chips as the way to go. My truck is a manual trans which doesnt get all the benefits from the chip.

Please help!! Let me know what to do besides trading,

that will get me more power...........

Re gearing will be your best bet. Although, regearing from 3.73 (you misquoted) to 4.10 is going to be negligible (SP?). Depending on what tire size you went to, I'd suggest regearing to 4.56. Especially for the price it's gonna cost you, might as well do it right this time. So tell us what tires you're running now. With a 4" lift, I'm guessing 33" tires.

Yes 33s. I have 295-75-16s. Which is pretty much a 33, measuring against my buddies 33*12.5s mine measure just a bit taller and just a bit more narrow.

4.10s will get me back to the power I had from the factory with the 265s and 3.73 setup. What exactly would the 4.56s be like? Most of my driving is on the highway. The truck has ok power above 2k or 2.5k rpms. but in 5th gear @ 75mph it rides at 1700rpm and bogs down on hills.

Oh, and the truck is a manual 5 speed...

The 4.56s will provide you with more torque. However your gas mileage will suffer a little since you'll be running a higher RPM to achieve the same speed as you would with 3.73s or 4.10s. If you want to see what RPMs you'll be running at what speed given a different setup, go to this website: http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html Scroll down and you can enter your info, click calculate and it will give you the speed at different RPMs. You can determine what's best for you.

If most of your driving will be highway, do the 4.10s. If you do any towing and/or off-roading, you'll be happier with the 4.56 gear set. But your top end and gas will suffer. Everything in life is a trade-off. Also consider if you'll ever graduate to 35" tires. If you think that's even 5 years down the road, save the $ and do the 4.56 now. As a former jeeper, I went from stock to 30s, to 31s, then to 33s. And before I sold my Jeep (for my silverado) I was itching for some 35s. Do it right the first time.

Im with you on the do it right the first time....

I will probably go with the 4.10s. The 295s are the largest I can go with the 4 inch lift. I wanted 315s like the factory h2s but they rub the bumper and/or the rear of the fender.

Whats your feel on programmers?

I have no knowledge of programmers. All of my automobile knowledge comes from owning a 1989 Jeep for the past 9 years. It had a very basic ECM (computer) and I never touched it. The less sensor/electrical stuff the better. The extent of my knowledge for what you're looking for would be the tow/haul mode... in that it adjusts the shift points. Isn't that basically a built-in basic programmer? I suppose other programmers can adjust rich/lean ratios and other stuff. So I dunno.

But yeah, sounds like 4.10s would be sufficient. Just a thought to save you some ca$h... some silverados came with 4.10s factory, right? Perhaps you could find a whole axle assembly at the junk yard for cheaper than a gear change. I know for Jeeps a gear swap ran between $600-$800 per axle. And that was for a solid axle. Might be higher for IFS differentials. Dunno. That's new for me too. :)

Its very hard to find rear and front ends for these trucks. I have found Auburn Gears from:
www.4wheelparts.com

They are around 4-5 hundred per axle. I have bought alot from this website and used their stores in the west. If you havnt check them out they are great and actually have educated people to talk to. They have tons of Jeep parts as well.

No problem. You're doing the work yourself? That $600-$800 per axle was for the gearset and installation. If you're getting a shop to install the gears, you're looking at another $500 per axle. $2000 for the whole she-bang. Let us know how it goes.
