1990 S10 headlight switch controls ignition

I just bought a 1990 S10, and it has some very odd electrical irregularities. Sometimes the right turn signal tries to blink so fast that it flickers (and the bulbs are okay), and sometimes it makes the radio display blink dim and bright along with it (when it is flashing normally). The 4-way circuit stops flashing and the lights remain lit whenever the parking lights or headlights are on, and after turning the ignition off while the parking lights or headlights are on, the engine slows just a bit but continues to run until the headlights are turned off. I assume this is some kind of system ground problem ...

Where should I look?!

Thank you,

Joe

try checking the bulbs if you put a 2 wire bulb in the socket instead of a one wire bulb it will cuse that i had the same problem with my 86 caveir.

Thank you for your quick response, Nomad!

Since all the light circuits and the ignition work properly most of the time, I am assuming all the bulbs are the correct ones. However, I did notice a broken (fatigued) wire going to one of the license plate lights, and that makes me suspcious there might also be bad wires or insulation elsewhere. I will let you know if I find anything ...

I just posted a response to the other s10 engine cut issue. but my response seems appropriate here as well.

I installed some fog lights awhile back and started having issues with electrical. turned out the be the batery ground to the bottom of engine/frame, just cleaned it real well sprayed it and re-attached and all the intermitant electrical issues went away. (including static over the radio(FM) with engine rev)

Well, I believe my problem might be solved! While replacing a bad battery yesterday, I was looking around for bad ground connections and when my son-in-law asked "What's this?", we discovered that the braided strap on the firewall was not connected to the engine. I have only had this truck for a week and I do not know its history, but the engine has obviously either been rebuilt or replaced and someone had apparently overlooked that strap. In any case, now my volt meter on the dash reads more like it should, the light circuits have not acted up, the ignition works properly, radio reception has improved and the engine has lost most of its hesitation.

Thank you to all ...

Joe
