2002 2500hd 8.1L

Ok, so the problem is just driving normally under normal conditions the truck will just turn off. Just out nowhere, shuts the engine off. It still has power and will just turn over until it feels like starting up again. I might as well throw in its running around 15-17 volts.

I would hypothesize that it might be the computer or something dealing with fuel injection. Just a guess...

We will probably need a little more information on the trucks history  such as the odometer reading and pertinent maintenance that has been done.
It would also be very handy if you could stop by an auto-part store and have them retrieve any DTC codes that may be set with a scan tool.
Now flying blind here the first few things that I would check are the fuel filter, the fuel pressure regulator and for anything obvious such as loose electrical connectors under the hood.
It could also be a faulty crank or cam position sensor but you will need to retrieve the DTC's to properly troubleshoot those.

ok, 72,000 miles. Oil changed regularly except when we went too long on one. Lasted 8,000 miles. Since then it has lost a full quart of oil; I put Lucas stabilizer as a replacement. Regular replacements have been made, what exactly? I don't know. Though i'm sure that would help.

Would any DTC codes show up if the check engine light is not on?

How long since you replaced the fuel filter? If you aren't sure then do this first.

1qt oil consumption over an 8,000 mile leg is actually very minimal for an 8.1L and GM cautions against using oil additives.

DTC's can be stored even though the SES light is not on.

This sounds like your crank position sensor. This is a common problem on 01-03 8.1L's apparently. It's such a problem that GM has issued a recall on the part and any dealer will replace the part for free! It was issued in Dec. 2007. Take the truck in, having done a little research online under: 8.1L recalls and other key words such as stalling, recall, 8.1L etc... it will come up. Print it out and take it to a Dealer and have the work done free without the service manager run around.. Get the recall number.
Good luck,
STEW

Stew,
The recall that you mention (GM document ID #2044115) only applies to some early build 2001 8.1L equipped vehicles.
The 2002 8.1L engines have the updated crank sensor from the factory.

You are correct. It does apply to 2001's. My mistake. However, his problem does sound typical of a bad CPS...

Good luck with the fix.

you may wanna check the mass air flow sensor.  any problem with it and the engine will flatline.

Check your battery connectivity at the posts.  You may have corrosion which won't permit charging the battery effectively, so after running off the battery a while which then exhausts, poof... no engine.

Also, the Starter Crank Relay may be defective. It costs 9 dollars at most AutoZones.

Well, you wanted suggestions, right?
