Besides having the codes cleared with a scan tool, what is the DIY procedure for turning off/resetting the check engine light?

Forgot to mention, above is in regards to a 1997 Silverado 2wd 5.0L.

It has to be cleared with a scan tool.

You gotta figure out what caused the check engine and fix the problem. Depending on the code or codes involved once fixed the light will stay off. A few codes will require a determined number of on/off "cycles" without error before it will go out. You can always erase codes by disconnecting the battery for at least a half hour. That resets the PCM. The check engine light will come right back on and stay on till you fix whatever is causing it
