Hey All,

First post as I explained in the general forum I have decided to build a 350 from scratch. Not Sure what I am going to put it in ( 68 camaro or 72 Cheyenne ). I have played and tweaked the 350 in a 72 blazer I had, but it was a daily driver and had no time to do what i wanted to it.

I have given myself 1.5 yeas to get this done. The catch to this is I want to start with a "bare block" This I feel will be the best way for me to learn most everything there is to know about the MY ENGINE.

So here is my expectations, and please chime in and let me know if this is reaistic.

1. Dependable
2. Driveable ( being able to jump in a go on a road trip ) 600 mi
3. Horsepower somewhere around 400 to the wheels
4. Low end torque
5. Avail parts

The info I have found is a 350 4 bolt main is for me. If anyone has any suggestions, comments, or advice please feel free. I am also looking for a reputable place to purchase the block, does not have to be new but needs to be good. also the expected price I should be expected to pay.

Thanks in Advance
Brandon

I think you should be able to build a motor to meet your needs.  May i suggest building a stroker motor though.  with the more cubic inches you have the easier it will be to meet you goal of 400 rear wheel HP and still make it easily streetable.  You can buy a fully balanced rotating assembly from Eagle for around $1300 this includes every thing you would need to build a short block. Crank, pistons, rods, bearings, flywheel and balencer.  On top of that id put a Comp Cams cam in it.  hyd. flat tappet would work but if you have the extra money go full roller top end.

Or if you prefer you could buy a complete top end kit which includes everything you need to build the rest of the long block(cam to intake).  For about 2K.  The most important thing in building an engine is how well everything works together.  A really hot cam and stock heads will do you no good becuase the heads can't flow the amount of air the cam wants it too.

Or if you want a proven combination you can go to summitracing.com and order a complete long block from BluePrint Engines.  a 383 stroker with 405 hp and 440 ft/lbs of torque will run you about 3K.  You provide the Carb distrubitor and front end (water pump, alt, ect)  Now keep in mind thats at the flywheel and there will be some power loss.  Thats about 9.5 to 1 compression which is pretty good for a street use.  They have several there so check them out.  Really the best thing to do is set a budget and see what you can afford and go from there.  I hope this helps.
