Fuel pump noise

'03 burb, 2500, 8.1L, 61k miles --

Noticed a high pitched/high pressure whine/whirring sound from the fuel pump "area" (near drivers rear tire/fuel tank area) a couple of weeks ago and now it appears that it is not an intermitten noise. It has not stopped since. Makes it only when engine is actually running. I've done the turn-the-key-to-the-on position and it does not make the sound. It has not created any problems, but I'm pretty sure it's not really normal... All other indicators are normal with no problems. Anyone care give advice? This is the first I have done to start addressing the issue. Thanks for any input.

it be best to replace the pump, early signs of failure

for a noise gauge - if i'm sitting in the truck, parked, running with the windows up, I can't hear it but if I roll the window down, it's the first thing I notice. I would equate it to someone under the truck in that scenario with a dewalt cordless drill just holding the trigger, only a higher pitched whirl.

btw- I'm an aircraft mech so I'm up to speed on preventative maintenance.

I'm wondering if this is some type of high pressure fuel pump for the gas monster it's trying to feed...
it just sounds like a high pressure feeding noise.
