cold start ticking

george2041 -> cold start ticking (11/8/2007 9:52:57 AM)

On cold start my 2000 1500 5.3l ticks loudly for about 15 secs. It's pushing 200k. Could it be timing issues? Oil has just been changed.

Don't know if this is your issue.  I remember an old engine, about 200k miles, that did the same thing and it turned out that the rocker arms were worn down so that the oil passages were smoothed out on them.   The oil couldn't flow where it needed to when cold and caused the ticking sound.  Once the rocker arms were replaced, everything was good.

make sure spark plug wires and plugs are snug.

Another possibility is exhaust manifold bolts are a little loose or sometimes a crack in the manifold.  Leaks till it gets hot and expands.

Thanks for the great tips.......

I had the same problem with my 03, it turned out to be the manifold bolts had rusted so bad that it made the manifold lose just enough to leak and sound like lifter nose when you started it. Look really close you might see a black spot on the head where it is leaking. Thank goodness chevy paid to have it fixed because in the end it would have cost me 2500.00 because the dealer couldn't get all the bolts out of one head and they had to replace the head.

if it only last for 15 seconds its not likely your maifold..it will sound similar but a manifld wont stop after 15 seconds, sounds like carbon build up, or a lifter ticking.......

I had a 00 silverado and my bride drives 02 Burb.both equiped with a 5.3 vortec. they both tapped when they are cold.Gm.said it was the aluminum pistons.. your thoughts..are they feeding johnboy BS

It's got to be the rockers, that would be my first start. I'm curious of your maintenance habits, do you change your oil every 3000-4000 miles or do you use chevrolet's oil life system? What type of oil do you use (brand, and synth or conv).

Johnboy I really think GM is lying to you.
