I have a 2001 Chevrolet S-10 crew cab 4x4. I am having issues with the gas gauge. It goes from 1/4 tank to empty in a matter of seconds. Sometimes while I am driving, other times after I turn the truck off and back on. I had the fuel pump replaced last year and again last week. The dealer also replaced the sensor in the tank. None of these repairs have fixed the gauge. I am sick of going to the dealer only to be told there is nothing wrong. Is this a common thing with S-10's? Any suggestions on what it could be and how I can get it fixed? Thanks in advance!

I know this may sound funny to most mechanics, but if you take the positive cable off the battery spark it a couple of times and put it back on, it may solve your issue. If it makes your speedometer go to 100, you have a bad gauge cluster. It should fix the fuel guage... I can't explain why, it just does it.

I have a similar fuel gauge problem in my 99 S10 Ext Cab. You say "take the positive cable off the battery and spark it".

Can you tell me what you mean by "spark it a couple of times"? Or how you "spark" the positive cable.

It seems to be a common problem, mine has it too. It doesn't bother me though, I know how much mileage I get per tank, so even if it just stopped working it doesn't matter to me. I wouldn't spend all that money having sensors and pumps replaced, just to fix a "cosmetic" problem.

It's interesting to find discussions on this same subject on every GM car/truck forum on the web. Here's a link to a thread on a Corvette forum that seems to have a consensus on correcting the problem.

Most of the posts say the use of cheap gas leads to the problem. Top Tier fuels http://www.toptierfuels.com/ are recommended.

GM has formulated a fuel treatment to correct the problem.

"Use this new additive by GM which has a new ingredient to eliminate the fuel gauge problem (make sure you get the new stuff, which has the "PLUS" on the label):
