I just had exhaust put on my truck. I wanted a nice tone at idle and cruising and then at WOT i wanted it loud and to cackle. I initially wanted to put on true dual straight pipes from the cats back but the exhaust shop talked me out of it saying it would be too loud. They said to take out the muffler and put a Y in it and run out duals. I have a 2006 silverado crew cab with a 5.3. I did what they said and it really isn't loud at WOT like i wanted however it has a nice tone. Do you think that if i went back and had true duals put on like i wanted it would have a nice tone and cackle at WOT. Also, they put on 2.25" pipes. Is that ok or should they have put on 2.5" pipes? Most that i see have 2.5". Thanks for your time and advice.

Don't know what brand you got but I'd either go with some "purple hornies" (glasspacks) or Flowmaster 40 series. You can google them and should be able to find some sound clips. Also make sure they put an "X" pipe in between the left and right exhaust pipes to make use of the "scavenge" exhaust. You need some back pressure.

I got a buddy that has a 2000 silverado with the 5.3 heres what I did to it. Take everything from the catback off. Then put 2.5" all the way back. (If I am not mistaken 2.25 is what is stock on the truck). So after the cat split into two pipes (with a y-pipe) and run them side by side until you can safetly get the driver side exit pipe over the driveshaft (preferably right before the spare tire. Now use a glasspack (a very short one like under 20") in both pipes about 2.5 -3 inches before the axle, we didn't use a Muffler EDIT we just put a glasspack on it, trust me don't run without at least a glasspack, you will go insane without it. (Not hardly any difference that I can tell without the glasspack) and it did hurt the back pressure like caprice_couple said but we used a hypertech programmer on his truck and it took care of that this however is not by any means suddle as you will have the neighbors awake everytime you leave but after all got love the sound. Here is a clip I found off of youtube that is the closest thing to what my buddies truck sounds like. (THIS IS NOT HIS TRUCK) but it damn close. So crank your speakers up and enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdDwUlOmtt8&mode=related&search= Zach

I decided to put true duals on from the cats back. No muffler or glasspack. It sounds quite at idle and normal running and when you get on it you know about it. I didn't put on an H pipe or X pipe. Most people that i talked to said that the 5.3 didn't have so many ponies that you would have to worry about flowing.
