No start issue '03 Suburban

So here's an interesting one....the wife goes out to start the 'burb....comes back in the house and says truck won't start....go outside and try for myself.....turn the key, hear the fuel pump, go to start and truck tries to fire for about .5 sec and then goes back to cranking. Did this several times....went to the internet and found info on the Passlock system. So maybe it got confused and thinks we tried a different key to start it with....I even tried to crank it with the backup key...the info says to leave the key in the "on" position for >10 mins. Did that...still no start...but still seems like the computer is preventing the no start condition....even went to Advance Auto and bought a code scanner to see if a code was set....Nope, no code. Finally, I called the local service center and told them to send the rollback and "come get it". In talking to the fella on the phone, he asked me to go back out to the truck and try it again and see if the Security icon is flashing while cranking...tried it again, tries to crank and then once again, continues to crank with no start...don't remember if the Security icon was flashing as he asked me to try it one more time and "hold" the key...PRESTO..it cranked....I know for a fact that I had held that key several times in the pursuit of a start.....I can only surmise that the Passlock got confused....?? Anybody?

If the fuel pump was active and there were no DTC's present then your no-start condition was not caused by the VTD system.

If the no-start did not set any DTC's then it is usually the result of one of the following:
Low fuel quantity.
Clogged fuel filter.
Faulty fuel pump.
Dirty fuel injectors.
Contaminated fuel.
Worn or damaged spark plugs (although many times this will set a code).

Your suburban uses the Passlock2 system and the actual key itself doesn't matter... it's all in the ignition switch.

If the no-start did not set any DTC's then it is usually the result of one of the following:
Low fuel quantity.
Clogged fuel filter.
Faulty fuel pump.
Dirty fuel injectors.
Contaminated fuel.
Worn or damaged spark plugs (although many times this will set a code).

 
If these conditions were true, then why would it attempt to "start" for just a 1/2 second of each turn of the key?

Your suburban uses the Passlock2 system and the actual key itself doesn't matter... it's all in the ignition switch.

So you are thinking that I may have a faulty ignition switch?

Simple if the filter is clogged or the fuel is dirty or something, each time you restart it a small amount of fuel even it they are clogged will go in and as soon as you turn the key this will ignite but there is not enough to keep it going.....needs more fuel, clogged, dirty, ....

On older burbans they had an issuess it the tank is around a quarter and it is on even a small angle it WONT start....I parked mine on a curb one day, it showed just below a quarter and it would not start....put it in N and rolled it off the curb and it fired right up...oddly enough it was an 03 as well....

Not necessarily , i was pointing out it doesn't matter about the key for the Passlock2 system.

You mentioned the service guy asked if the security light was lit on the instrument cluster and you forgot to look.The next time it happens pay attention for this light.
If it lights up the next time you have problems starting it may be the ignition switch or it's associated wiring.

thanks for the input guys. Since I have only owned this vehicle a few months (purchased through Ebay) and I unfortunately do not know the history of it, I will change the fuel filter ASAP. I also have a '94 K1500 and have had fuel delivery issues related to the filter as well.
