Hey, I'm in the process of deciding on whether to buy a 3.4L base model 03 Impala, or a LS 03 Impala. The LS has 41k miles, while the base model has 26k... I'm wondering since they are priced the same, if the 3.8L engine has better components and reliability than the 3.4L engine, and whether the extra mileage for the same price will be worth it due to the larger engine. I know I definitly like the LS handling better, thats no doubt, but its not THAT much better.

It is my opinion that both engines do a fine job and if both have received proper care they should run a long time. I will say that for about 10 years the 3800 engine was rated as one of the 10 best engines in the world by "Wards Auto World". The engine may be classed as "Low Tech", but I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

I asked my mechanic the same question about the 3.4 or 3.8. He said he loves the 3.4 because they get to work on them
all the time. Mainly intake gaskets and sometimes heads. I bought a 03 ls with the 3.8. Very good engine. The one thing you will
notice about the impala is the popping sound in the steering, caused by a dry intermediate steering shaft. Easily fixed by a can
of grease. Other than that, go for the ls...It will last a long time.
