I have 2000 s-10 and my wife was pulling out into traffic and when she push on the gas pedal she said it would not pickup speed it was running but the rpm would not go up any ideals on what it could be.

see if their are any recals on the cat, if not is your light on? TPS, bad fuel pump, bad timing, (if it bogs down when you get on it it is more than likely timing) The comp can only adjust so far.

Most Auto-Zones or Advance Auto Parts stores will check your engine light for free. If they ask you if your light is on at that moment don't listen to them. If you have a 96 or newer and the engine light has been on it should still show the fault, unless the computer has been reset.
good luck.

If I were a betting man then I would most definatly put money on that the cat was clogged. Since the light is coming on it's more than likely going to throw a o2 sensor code.

I doubt it would be timing since it's all computer controlled.

I don't think it would be timing either, but being computer controled if it was off couldn't that be worse than a car that wasen't. The computer can only adjust so far.

Well why would the timing be off in the first place?

The chain could jump.
Not very likely on a 2000 but very possible.
Or it could be (I don't know if a 2000 would have this or not, but the older ones have plastic teeth on the cam gear) They tend to wear out pretty bad, and could cause the chain to jump a lot easier.
Also if he didn't buy it new some highschool kid could have been trying to hot rod it. Which would only worsen the problem.

True and I do beleive they have the plastic teeth. Kinda stereotyped though on the highschool kid part. I just turned 20 and granted all young kids aren't the smartest when it comes to motors but I've seen plenty of older guys that think they know stuff about cars but have no clue. Especially the ones that can work on older cars and think it applies to newer cars. I just plain hate that.

Also in order to adjust the timing you have to let the computer know which normally their is a plug that have unplug to bypass it other wise as soon as you change the timing the computer changes it right back.

True but if the chain is off far enough the computer will not be able to adjust enough, and once set right if you reset the computer it will adjust itself where it should be.
