Is there a headlamp switch that you can disable? I would imagine the daytime running lights are running from that source.

The vehicle has a defeat feature for DRLs.  Just turn the headlamp switch to the left momentarily -- the switch will spring back and they are off.  You will have to do this every time you start the vehicle.  It's an extra step, but it would be an easy habit to adopt if you want the HID lights.
