I'm planning on replacing my stamped steel 17" wheels with 18" GM Z71 wheels and would like to know if this will require new lug nuts.

Do you have the new rims yet? I am willing to bet that the 18 '' are aluminum, and the lug holes are recessed. If so you will need a longer lug nut to be able to keep a socket on them.
