i'm looking into getting a small 4x4 s15 from 88-87.  Can anyone let me know what years are good/bad? what engines are good/bad?

The 2.5 four cylinders are good engines, and the 4.3 V-6 is also a good engine.  You shouldn't have a problem with the year range other than the truck being old it may need some work.
