i have a 2002 suburban, 5.3 liter. may of last year my wife ran out of gas when the guage said 1/4 tank, in june we went on vacation to chicago, on the way i was driving and totally forgot about the problem and i ran out, i put 3 gals in which got me to the next fuel stop, 15 mi. i filled up, it only took 24 gals in a 34 gal tank, if you figure that i probobly had about 1.5-2 gals of the 3 we put in on the side of the road, that makes that it had about 8 gals, which is about a 1/4 of a tank which is what it read when i ran out. then it would start dieing about every 50-75 miles, it would restart in about 5 min. then got worse down to 10 miles and 15 min. went to shop, had new pump module installed, now it runs fine but still runs out at 1/4 tank. i did replace the fuel filter and fuel cap also.Thanks, Russell

I have the exact same problem with my 2002 Sub. it has 115,000 and I have to fill it up at 1/4 of a tank. Tonight it just died on me driving down the road, as if it ran out of gas. It has a full tank of gas in it. Did you ever solve the problem? I see you put in a new pump module and fuel filter and fuel cap. How much did all of that cost?

If you're getting intermittent stalling on your 02 I would look at the Crankshaft Position Sensor. You didn't say you were experiencing that type of problem but just in case that's what is happpening...

Our 02 8.1L was stalling everyday at almost the same spot (within a tenth of a mile). I found something on the Avalanche forum about the CKP going out on a significant number of their trucks and sure enough, problem gone. $65 for the sensor + $70 labor at GM garage. I tried to replace it myself but I couldn't get my hands down/up there. A real PITA!!
