All makes have good and bad points, and every single one has at least one lemon in the lineup. In trucks - has anyone noticed that the long standing "Twin I Beam" suspension on Ford trucks has gone away in the last few years?

True story! The front ends of newer fords are now coil spring with A-Frames. This means the strange lift kit hardware that used to be is going to be less and less available. It also means they are going to be cheaper and easier to lift - so don't be suprised if a lot of Chevy suspension lift tech suddenly shows up in the competitions driveways.

The TIB was noted for being more solid off-road, but is better known for wandering all over the street on paved roads, especially highways.

Chevy for life? Don't know. Chevy engines have always been easier and less expensive to beef up, and the ports in the heads are nicer. Most ford head ports are pretty small, except the 351M and 400M. The Cleveland engine family weighs a ton more than it should though, and the induction was frankly overkill. Most Cleveland stock, including tool and die, was sold to Australia many years ago.

The engine families in ford machines are many and confusing. The basic 302, 351W, and 460 engines are about all you would really want to mess with, but this makes the performance aspects very limited.

In Chevrolet - you have 283, 327, 350, 350 4bolt main (LT1), 396, 400, 454, and the Poncho 455 to play with, all of which are heavily supported by the aftermarket.

The reason ford parts are more expensive is because.....
Ford parts are more expensive.

In other words, from what I can see there isn't any real reason they should be. Are they better or worse? I don't think so. But they will cost, and are not as many of them.

Case in point: Go look for intake manifolds, aluminum heads, cams, and headers for both ford and chevrolet. Divide a sheet of paper in half, mark one side chevy, and the other side ford. Make a check mark for each product you find for each at just one site...

You'll get the picture in no time.

If you want to modify and play with engines, you don't want to do it to a ford. There just aren't enough options.

NOW...

In writing this I have been (I think) fair and objective. I am not one to jump up and down and holler "MY BRAND! MY BRAND!!!" for no particular reason. I think the ford -vs- chevy deal is the oldest joke in hotrodding. It's still pretty funny - but it is an oldy.

What I truly think is that if you have a motor vehicle that you enjoy, and like to work on, then whatever that is - good on you.

PS: If you ever need unbiased advice on it, no matter what make it is - feel free to bark at me. I might still poke a tiny bit of fun - but I'd rather people felt that I would help them than that they don't dare even ask.

PPS: Silly me, I forgot one other detail. Statistically (and you can check up on it with a simple search or two) Chevrolet engines, since the 1960's onward have produced higher "Horsepower -per- Cubic Inch" than other american engines. At least, in V8 engines. I read something about that a while ago, and it checks with what I knew earlier - like about 1979 or thereabouts.

I've owned more Fords than Chevys I like Chevys better. Here's why, Chevys parts are ten times more interchangeable and replacement parts/high performance parts are easier/cheaper to find. Example: I can take a 1995 Malibu and it's bolt pattern on it's rim will fit my 70's model B body! Try that with a Ford. If I am wrong, I'll say so!! I once had a 350 with over 300,000 miles on it. I entered it in a contest once because of the mileage but was beat out by a Datsun 2B10 that had 800,000 miles!

I think I've met as many people who've had great experiences with Chevy as Ford. Maintenance is key. Now, for some reason (I'm no diesel tech), I've encountered buyers who'd never consider a Powerstroke again, but never buyers who'd never consider a Duramax again. But that could be why Isuzu design is better than Navistar, I suppose.
