How you guys doin i dont post on here very often because the only chevy in our house is my fathers. I drive a dodge (go ahead and rag on me if you please) however i am just curious what type of exhaust system you would reccomend on an 03 silverado 1500 with a 4.8 4x4 ext. cab short bed..... i know he likes the split rear look and i was going to get him a set and install it for fathers day..... Thanks for the help!

Interesting... I didn't know Dodge drivers could read AND write, let alone use a computer.

Kidding...

I've been really happy with my exhaust set-up. No muffler, just straight pipes from the headers coming out the side of my truck. Aside from some popping during deceleration; I love the exhaust note (thunderous rumble) and love the asthetics of the side pipes. Just make sure whatever you chose the pipes aren't easily oxidized...

I personally like Gibson. Very good quality, reasonable price, and good sound while keeping it quiet in the cab( I hate drone ). Fit is usually excellent so the average guy can do it in the driveway with minimal effort. A split rear exit system for the truck you mention would run around $375 for an aluminized system and about $500 for a stainless system. I put a Gibson stainless split rear system on the 05 Silverado EC 4WD 4X4 w/ 5.3L I just sold( bought a 2007 Silverado new body style ). The link below will show you a short video of it.

What I like about Gibson, besides almost no interior drone, is their systems are more mellow like an old muscle car. Not loud and obnoxious like most Flowmasters and Magnaflows or glass packs and straight pipes. To each his own but I hate trucks that sound like tanks. You know you have duals and it sounds great but not overly loud with Gibson. Your Dad's 4.8L will sound pretty much the same as mine did.

NOTE - that is not smoke it is condensation. Was early AM and butt cold when I started it. Also, it was running at high idle. Once warmed up it had a deeper rumble.

I am not a Flowmaster fan at all. They are obnoxious and cheap quality(IMO)for the most part. Probably the cheapest system on the market of the bolt on popular ones. You can get a basic aluminized Flowmaster system for like $250 if you shop. Just don't expect it to last very long before it rots out. Magnaflow makes a decent system but will run you about the same as a Gibson. Corsa and Borla are the real premium systems out there but they carry premium price tags of $700-$1000+ as well.

Nothing wrong with Dodge btw except they get the worst MPG of the Big 3 truck makers. I am a MOPAR guy at heart but had to sell my 04 QC HEMI 4WD because the MPG was so bad. Came to Chevy because they have the best fuel economy of the full sized trucks. Miss my HEMI something fierce.

You can find the part# using the look up feature on the site. 99-06 all take the same system depending on body style and bed length. I got mine through summit racing but all the popular online sites sell them.

This is the basic system I got. single in / dual out( Gibson system comes with tips btw ).

Cool. which one did you get, the aluminized or the Stainless Steel?

SS.

I have used both however and really unless you keep your truck for 5+ years buying the SS system is just throwing money down the drain. I live in an area with high road salt during the winter and have run the aluminized systems in the past. Rust was never an issue. I sell in the 2.5-3.5 year range however. I "thought" I was going to keep the 05 for a while so I spent the extra for SS.

SS will long outlast aluminized. Aluminized just means it is regular steel pipe with a coating similar to galvanized. The point I was making is that aluminized pipe will last for as long as most people keep their vehicles even in areas that see severe winters with road salt.

If you will only have your truck say 3 or 4 years then it is a waste of money buying SS because the aluminized will last that long easy. I have had it on trucks for 3 years or so and it barely showed rust. If you are one of these people that keep your truck a long time( 5+ years )then SS makes more sense because it will last a long long time.

The extra $200 +/- for a SS system is only going to buy you time. It does not buy you better performance. So, which to buy depends on how long you will keep the vehicle you put it on. I lost money on my 05 because I put a SS system on thinking I was going to keep it a long time but ended up selling the truck after just a year.
