07 Cobalt oil consumption - 5/23/2007 10:20:24 AM    nvhguy51   Posts: 4 Joined: 5/21/2007 Status: offline Has anybody had issues w/ excessive oil consumption on their Cobalt?  Mine has about 11,500 miles on it and it puts out puff of smoke after downshifting to slow the vehicle and then making a right turn.  There is one turn on my drive home that can make the car do it consistently.  I've had it to the Dealership twice and they just want me to "keep an eye on it".  The implication is that I drive aggressively.  I'm averaging between 33-34 mpg, which makes me very happy these days, so I doubt that it is caused by "agressive driving". Anyone have any knowledge of an issue with this package...? Thanks to all, Post #: 1

RE: 07 Cobalt oil consumption - 5/28/2007 2:12:36 PM    hillbilleous   Posts: 26 Joined: 4/18/2007 Status: offline I haven't heard anything about this before.  My advice is to keep going back to the dealer (as inconvinient as it is) usually by the third time they get a little nervous about the situation and they try harder.  If all else fails, give the Chevrolet Corporation 1-800... number a call with your complaint about the car and the dealer you have brought it to and make them aware of the situation.  They don't like it when customers aren't happy.  I should know, I work for a dealer (in reply to nvhguy51) Post #: 2

RE: 07 Cobalt oil consumption - 6/13/2008 8:02:31 AM    nvhguy51   Posts: 4 Joined: 5/21/2007 Status: offline Well,  It''s been fully 1 year now since I first reported the oil smoke (large puff of smoke) issue on accel when preceeded by a decel.  The car has 19,000 miles on it.  I have been back to the dealer...many times  GM has refused to let the Dealer perform any repairs or investigations until an Oil Consumption Survey is complete.  I''ve been in 6 times to have it checked and topped off using about 3-4 qts of oil over that time period.  So far the results indicate that its using oil...surprise!.  Now I''m told that they (the Dealer) can''t act until the survey has been completed...another 6 visits to the Dealer...or approx another 3000-4000 miles. At this rate I''ll die of old age before they actually begin any kind of Root Cause Investigation.  I have contacted Customer Assistance and they have generated an..."Issue".  When I ask what the next steps are they refer me back to the Dealer because they aren''t Technically trained.  The Dealer refers me to Customer Assistance for direction. I''m stuck in a continuos "Do Loop" between the two of them.  The Dealer can''t act unless Customer Service tells them what to do...and Customer Assistance won''t tell the Dealer what to do because they aren''t technically trained... I''m at a loss.  It can''t be very good advertising for GM when a cloud of smoke belches out the back of my new car when I accelerate from a stop.  Maybe a video will be required next.  It''ll make one cool video when it puts up that cloud of smoke. Please discard PIP4165A. The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI. Important: This PI does not apply to other models with the same engine. It only applies to the models above if the last 8 digits of the VIN are 77374720 - 77378216. Condition/Concern: On rare occasions, blue oil smoke from the exhaust may be noted at operating temperature at idle, or on acceleration after an extended idle/deceleration. This may be the result of oil entering the intake port and combustion chamber of cylinder 2 by bypassing the outside diameter of either intake valve guide. Recommendation/Instructions: If this concern is encountered, turn the engine off as the concern is occurring and remove the spark plugs for inspection. If the #2 spark plug has oil deposits on it but the other 3 spark plugs look normal, remove the intake manifold and inspect the bottom 1/4" of both #2 intake valve guides for a vertical groove that may have been mistakenly machined into the outside diameter of either valve guide. Typically, the groove will be facing the intake port opening. If there is no groove present but it is obvious that there is excessive oil in either of the #2 intake ports when compared with other intake ports, remove the related valve spring and valve seal to inspect the other end of the valve guide for this groove.
