throttle body or carb?

bigboy_j -> throttle body or carb? (5/17/2007 3:15:42 PM)

I have a 1987 silverado that i want to make into a toy.  it is 2 wheel drive so i want to make into a street machine.  it has the stock throttle body but i am thinking about going to a 4brl carb.  what will this task involve and is it worth it performance wise?

If the fuel injection system is running good, I'd stay with it. It doesn't look as awesome as a big 4 bbl, but it does a better job. With a carb you are going to lose a little gas mileage, more if you go too big. You will lose cold starting capability the FI gives you. If you do any offroading, the carbs don't hold up as well on hillsides as the float(s) will not read right. Plus its very expensive to buy the intake, carb, fuel pump, and new distributor (since your dizzy now runs off of the computer). Your talking somewhere around $1000 for good new stuff.

what upgrades would you suggest if i do keep my throttle body?  I want to get more torque and speed out of her. Also i found the parts to go to a carb for around $500.  they are a holley 4brl 600cfm carb, edlebrock air-gap intake, and a h.e.i. dizzy.  with those parts would it be worth it.  and by the way im building a street machine, it will never go off-road.  Thanks.

Getting those parts at that price is a difference. I might have to replace my injectors since I am having a miss that hasn't been easy to fix. New injectors are pricey - I'm just not sure how many I have!! I would love this being user-friendly.
