can't get key out of ignition

I have a 02 malibu with 45K miles. This has been an intermittent problem until tonight. The car is off and firmly in park, but I can't get the key out of the ignition. I read somewhere about a shift interlock cable that may need to be adjusted. Does this make sense? Has anyone else had this problem? Is this something a good do-it-yourselfer can manage?

Before tonight, i would just move the shifter to drive and back to park and the key would be released.

ya it was the shifter cable in my buddys car. he took it to the dealer to get it ajusted. im not sure exactly what to do if you want to do it yourself. sorry i cant be of more help.

same problem with my 2000 malibu. now i have a malibu that drives without a key in the ignition and only needs the key to start and turn off. key will slide right out but yet again its draining the battery due to the electronic transmission inditicator on the dash stays on. if anyone knows how to fix this please inform me.
