'98 4.3 v6 exhaust question

hines182 -> '98 4.3 v6 exhaust question (5/12/2007 11:11:38 PM)

I have a '98 k1500 with a 4.3 and 5 spd and the catalytic converter has gone bad.. I wouldn't mind having a nice sounding exhaust anyways so I thought about bypassing the cat but there's a sensor attached so I figure it's a bad idea.. I was thinking about doing a custom dual exhaust and everything but i donno where to start and what i can get away with or if i can tweak the computer to get away with more... what kind of options do i have?

To make is simple and not have to mess with the computer, do a cat back dual exhaust.  If you want to get rid of the cat you can get something that plugs into the sensors and tells the computer it is running right.  If you want to do that call summit racing 1-800-230-3030.  I don't know where else to get them.  But if you want an opinion, I would replace the cat and put a catback dual exhuast on it.  I say that because the o2 sensors will pickup things like a dirty fuel filter, or oily plugs that still fire with a rich or lean code.  It will be easier to keep it running the way it should.

I see what you mean.. I wouldn't want to tweak the computer and ditch the cat unless I could still tell if something besides the cat wasn't working... So I don't think I'll go with tweaking the computer.. Here's my other problem: I haven't been able to find a cat back exhaust system for a 4x4 with 4.3 and I've looked at all the major parts carriers.. Should I just retro-fit an exhaust system from a different vehicle?
