--Hi, all.  A friend of mine is telling me about his 4WD system in his 2002 Silverado.  He says that the previous owner "special ordered" the 4WD system and that not many people have his 4WD type.  He says his 4WD doesn't have any of that "limited slip" crap.  He's convinced that it is the best thing since sliced bread..."better than the four wheel drives in Fords Toyotas Dodges and the regular 4WD that usually comes with the Chevrolet Silverado".  So, can you Silverado owners tell me what kind of 4WD system does he have that was special ordered?  Do any of the other pickup manufacturers have something similar?  Thanks for your help.  I was just curious.

The only 4wd system i know by chevy is the Z71, if he says its not, then he is just pulling your leg.

The Z71 package is not the 4WD option.  The Z71 package adds skid plates and upgrades the shock absorbers.  To get the Z71 package you must have the 4WD option also.  The only 4WD options were either the base option with a manual 4WD shifter in the floor OR the more expensive pushbutton version in the dash.  The pushbutton version also provides full-time 4WD capability, called AutoTrac.  Whether the rear differential is Limited Slip or not is a separate option.  Limited Slip is not available in the front axle.

I beleive that you friend is "full of it"!

Thanks for the replies.  So, what kind of 4wd types are available in the Silverado?  Limited Slip Diff. is one type, I guess (I guess LSD is not a 4WD "system", though), but what else is there that makes him thinks it works better than other 4wd system?  I thought all trucks had LSD in them.  As you can tell, I know little about 4WD.  Thanks.

P.S.
I wonder if he is talking about the "full time" 4WD...and does that make it "better" than the 4wd in other trucks?  Thanks again.

what the Chevy has is a positive traction rear end.  when the rear end senses a 25 rpm difference between one tire and the other it essentially turns into a locker.  as far as 4wd systems the Chevy system is probably one of the best out there.  I know i can blow by my buddy's jeep cause he'll be sittin there with just one rear tire spinnin and ill blow buy with both.  hes got the weight advantage but ive got pure power and traction on my side.
